After previous collaborations with Fulgeance, Kelpe and Big Mister Doom, the latest release from London beatmaker Huess on the Inaudible Answer label features his most personal musical statement to date. Wearing his influences on his sleeve, this is a 6-track EP of the kind of psychedelic electro-wonky hip hop that fills headphones from LA to Tokyo via London, Paris and Vilnius.

The set is introduced by Cabin Black, a Prefuse 73 style amalgamation of radio interference and dismembered voices which provides a rabbit hole for listeners to enter the beat-heavy wonderland of the tunes to come. Track 2 is therealmedusaphillips, a crunching hip hop take on Daft Punk’s ‘Da Funk’ which manages to both maintain the b-boy elements of the original and move it on to something more atmospheric. White Man has already been featuring in sets by Huess’ peers, alloying a simple Chinese bell melody to an elastic bassline and a meaningless rain of synth arpeggios bringing to mind old Slugabed tracks. Track 4 (1986) is a bouncy retro electro-phunk number nonetheless featuring a haunting set of Paul Hardcastle-style samples warning of the dangers of drug abuse. This then segues into Sister Serena Somewhere a down tempo head-nodder in the vein of J Dilla/Madlib with an outro which brings to mind classic-era DJ Premier inserts. The EP is rounded off with Last Hurrah, sounding like a melancholy dirty southern hip hop remix of ‘80s synth pioneers like Steve Winwood, it might just be the best of the bunch.
